Operation BBQ Relief is a non-profit disaster relief organization that provides hot BBQ meals to those affected by disasters and the first responders helping those communities. In 2017, we were recognized by CNN Heroes as one of the top 10 finalist for Hero of the Year. We are looking to grow our social media team. College students that have a passion to serve in the non-profit world, are creative and want to use their skills in social media to make a difference are perfect candidates for this position.

This summer internship will run (June-August), requiring approximately 10 hours per week with flexible hours. We would prefer the person be in the Kansas City metro area, but for the right candidate, we will consider virtual. For the right person, this could become a paid position.

Responsibilities

The Intern will help create content for our daily/weekly social media calendar; utilizing collateral including, but not limited to: searching our photo/video library for compelling content to include in posts while also using their creativity and skills to find ways to engage our followers.

Requirements

Candidates must have a passion to help people and a desire to make a difference in communities affected by disaster. Must have completed two years of college with intended major in Communication, Marketing, Social Work, Education, or Journalism. Must understand how to utilize the tools in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to boost, promote and advertise on these platforms. Understanding how to use Hootsuite and Mail Chimp is a plus.

Graphic Design Intern

Responsibilities

– Assists in design and development of layouts for marketing materials, using appealing graphics that are well organized
– Incorporate current design trends into each unique layout to produce an up-to-date style for custom ads
– Exercise good judgment when interpreting instructions, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions
– Utilize strong written skills, bringing effective visual ideas from concept through to completion

Requirements

– Working towards a BA or certificate from a Fine Arts program/Graphic Design school
– Experience with Adobe InDesign, and proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
– Knowledge of Mac OS and software upgrades and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
– Must have your own computer to create the graphics
– Must be a team player and flourish in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
– Open to constructive criticism and customer feedback
– Must provide a portfolio for review

Video/Video Journalist/Editing Intern

As video production becomes increasingly critical to the growth, development, and success of managing a successful non-profit, we seek intern candidates that are leaders, who are passionate about non-profit management and possess skills in video production and editing.

Responsibility

The intern’s primary responsibility is to review all our current video content, catalog the videos, edit and create short videos to use by our social media team and website team. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to shoot video and edit it as well for projects as they arise. Maybe even the opportunity to do so on a disaster deployment.

Requirements

Candidates should have an understanding of computer hardware. Some post-production, NLE and interactive media experience preferred, especially Final Cut Pro, Flash, Adobe After Effects. Experience in DVD production, experience living and working within diverse communities, and a passion for independent media is a plus.

Photography/Photojournalist Intern

– Photograph events, disaster deployments, equipment and people
– Color correct photos for use in online and print publications
– Review, Maintain, and organize digital photo archive (includes all photos files)
– Assisting the marketing team with other assignments as needed

Requirements

– Must submit cover letter, resume and 8-10 examples of your best photography that include people and emotion
– Must have own digital SLR camera
– Enthusiastic, energetic, well-organized, creative and flexible
– Demonstrated skill with digital SLR cameras
– Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop
– Comfortable approaching the public to request photo release form signatures
– Able to make a 2-3 month commitment for 10 hours per week

Event Planner Intern

College students that have a passion to serve in the non-profit world, are creative and want to use their skills in event planning to ensure successful events are perfect candidates for this position.

We are looking for an addition to our team to help plan all our events. The candidate will work with several departments to ensure that the needs for the event are met. The Event Planner must be organized and strive to ensure that every event promotes the organization in a positive light. In addition, the Event Planner will document these successes on our blogs and social media sights.

Responsibilities

– Managing Calendar of events
– Providing Social Media and Website Manager Dates and specifics to post
– Write summary of each event to paint a picture of the event.
– Helping with the marketing of the events (some travel maybe required at our expense)

– Help get events on community event boards in the area the events are being held.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  1. Develop a monthly newsletter utilizing Mail Chimp and working with our website designer to present in a clear, dynamic format
  2. Assist in creating social media posts that support the newsletter
  3. Increase newsletter subscribers
  4. Create and send press releases to local venue media outlets
  5. Aid in developing special projects, i.e. short videos, editing materials, emails, etc.
  6. Assist with event participant management for further donations and communication
  7. Other duties as assigned

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The individual must be self-motivated and have the ability to problem solve and to seek out creative solutions independently but also understand that program development requires community effort. A strong writing background is desired and writing samples are required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Completed at least two years of full¬time studies at a university or equivalent institution toward the completion of a degree in communications, advertising, or similar areas of study. – Contact donors from prior years gaining commitment for current year and working to increase their donations over the prior year

– Work with leadership to identify the high net worth donors so they can contact those individuals
